With the news of Andrew Tate launching the political party BRUV in the UK, Trump winning the US election, and Reform reaching an all time high in members. I would like to tell you about my journey through politics and about how I was influenced, and was then able to break free from the alt-right pipeline. I am doing this so people who are reading this do not make the same mistakes that I did.
Firstly, you might be asking what the alt-right pipeline is. The alt-right pipeline (also called the alt-right rabbit hole) is a proposed conceptual model regarding internet radicalization toward the alt-right movement. It describes a phenomenon in which consuming provocative right-wing political content, such as anti-feminist or anti-SJW ideas, gradually increases exposure to the alt-right or similar far-right politics. (wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt-right_pipeline).
Later on in this article on wikipedia it states how it has a transformative effect on the user. It also states that the user is not immediately aware of their change of views and understanding. This is why I was not aware that I was in fact being radicalized by the alt-right.
For context for the past few years I thought that I was right wing. I once supported people such as Andrew Tate and Donald Trump. Now I honestly don’t understand how I ever did. So let me tell you a bit about how I escaped the alt-right pipeline and now realise that people such as Andrew Tate and Donald Trump are bad and damaging to society.
So what made me have a sudden flip in viewpoint. It was a Friday morning and I took a Political compass quiz. Naturally I thought it was going to tell me that I was right wing. But to my shock it told me I was left wing. So after this I went back to things that I at one time supported, such as Reform and took a look at their “contract with the people” again, and this time realized there were some things in there, which do infringe on trans-rights and frame things in a way that simply are not true.
In their “Contract with the people” it states that one of their points is “No gender questioning, social transitioning or pronoun swapping.”. I mean how can we have a free or fair society where a child can not even question their gender. That to me is far-right and completely wrong. I then kept reading things about people I used to support such as Trump, now looking at this from a fairer view point I realised that he is an idiot. I mean how can we take someone seriously who thinks that climate change is the same thing as the weather.
Now for the topic of Andrew Tate, possibly the most infamous man on the planet. So where did I first come across Andrew Tate? I first just heard about him as a joke and a meme at the end of 2022. I then started to watch and consume more of his content in 2023 and for a reason that I will never know I got sucked in and started to support him, and it's safe to say I was disillusioned and can safely say he is evil and most definitely a misogynist.
One thing that also drew me away from Andrew Tate was his stance on mental health. He often shows mental health struggles as a sign of weakness, he also uses harmful rhetoric that perpetuates stigmas around mental health. This could make it more difficult for someone to get the help that they deserve. As someone who suffers with OCD, I know firsthand how important it is to acknowledge mental health challenges and seek help.
This man is also one of the reasons as to why I am writing this article. I am sure that lots of people have seen that he has recently launched the political party BRUV. I think that this could be dangerous if people around my age fall into the same trap that I did, because in 2029 these same people could have the chance to vote for BRUV and may not be able to escape the alt-right pipeline.
Now, I find myself aligning more with progressive and left-leaning values that prioritize equality, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility. I believe in the importance of protecting the rights of marginalized communities, addressing climate change with urgency, and fostering a society that encourages critical thinking and empathy. These values feel far more in line with the kind of world I want to see, one where freedom and fairness are truly accessible to everyone.
In conclusion this article is to highlight what the alt-right pipeline is and so others do not fall for the trap that I did.
